Amy Cunningham, Psy.D

PA Licensed Psychologist
DBT-Linehan Board of Certification, Certified Clinician™
PSYPACT Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology (APIT)

I’m a licensed clinical psychologist who believes everyone deserves the opportunity to build a life guided by their values rather than defined by their struggles. Much of my work focuses on helping people who feel overwhelmed by intense emotions, trauma, or relationship difficulties. Together, we work to better understand these experiences, develop healthier ways of responding to them, and build practical skills that support meaningful, lasting change.

A focus of my practice is trauma treatment, particularly for individuals whose past experiences continue to impact their emotions, relationships, self-image, or sense of safety. I integrate DBT and DBT-Prolonged Exposure (DBT-PE) to help clients build the coping skills needed to heal from past traumatic experiences safely and effectively while creating meaningful change in their lives.

In addition to providing adherent DBT, a focus of my practice is helping people heal from trauma and the ways their past experiences may continue to affect their emotions, relationships, self-image, and sense of safety. My approach is compassionate, collaborative, and grounded in evidence-based treatment. I help clients recognize how their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors influence one another so they can make meaningful changes that align with the life they want to live.

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING and EDUCATION:

I am a DBT-Linehan Board of Certification Certified DBT Clinician  with more than 17 years of experience providing evidence-based treatments. While earning my doctoral degree from La Salle University, I completed a one-year intensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) at Yale University.

Following this training, I had the privilege of working at the University of Pennsylvania with Dr. Aaron Beck, founder of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, where I focused on suicide prevention and the dissemination of evidence-based treatments. During this time, I also completed intensive training in DBT developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan, the founder of DBT.

In addition, I completed intensive training in DBT-Prolonged Exposure (DBT-PE), an evidence-based treatment designed to help individuals recover from trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), particularly when trauma has contributed to difficulties managing intense emotions.

I have also received specialized training in supporting parents of adult children experiencing mental health challenges, helping families navigate the complex emotions, communication patterns, and decisions that often arise in these situations.

CONTINUOUS LEARNING:

DBT Certified Clinician LogoIn 2017, I became a DBT-Linehan Board of Certification Certified DBT Clinician, demonstrating my expertise in dbt therapy and commitment to providing high-quality psychology services. This board certification is a year-long, rigorous process involving multiple steps to certify that I provided adherent dialectical behavior therapy to the standards set by the research and Dr. Linehan, the treatment developer. In addition, I have completed multiple trainings in DBT-Prolonged Exposure. In these trainings, I was trained to incorporate Prolonged Exposure, the gold standard evidence-based treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, into a dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) framework, further expanding the psychology services we offer to clients seeking comprehensive care at the Center for Acceptance and Change.

I believe that by combining compassion and commitment, together we can overcome the obstacles that create suffering in your life
